How to Use JC Pet Shampoo
-
Brush Before Bathing
Brush your pet's coat thoroughly to remove loose hair, mats, and tangles. This helps the shampoo penetrate better and makes rinsing easier.
-
Wet Thoroughly
Using lukewarm water, wet your pet's entire coat down to the skin. Avoid getting water directly in ears, eyes, and nose.
-
Apply Shampoo
Pour a small amount of JC Pet Shampoo into your hand (amount depends on pet size - see guide below). Rub hands together to create lather.
-
Massage & Lather
Work the shampoo through your pet's coat, starting from the neck and working backward. Massage gently into the coat, paying special attention to dirty or smelly areas. Avoid face and ears initially.
-
Clean Face Carefully
Using a damp washcloth with a tiny amount of diluted shampoo, gently wipe around the face, avoiding eyes and inside ears.
-
Let Sit (Optional)
For pets with skin issues or extra dirty coats, let the shampoo sit for 3-5 minutes before rinsing. This allows the natural ingredients to work their magic.
-
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse your pet completely with lukewarm water. It's crucial to remove ALL shampoo residue, as leftover soap can cause skin irritation. Keep rinsing until water runs clear.
-
Dry Your Pet
Gently towel dry your pet. If using a blow dryer, use the lowest heat setting and keep it at a safe distance. Many pets prefer air drying in a warm room.
-
Brush Again
Once dry, brush your pet's coat again to prevent tangles and distribute natural oils.
-
Reward!
Give your pet lots of praise and a treat for being such a good sport during bath time!
Shampoo Amount Guide
- Small dogs & cats (under 20 lbs): 1-2 teaspoons
- Medium dogs (20-50 lbs): 1-2 tablespoons
- Large dogs (50-90 lbs): 2-3 tablespoons
- Extra large dogs (over 90 lbs): 3-4 tablespoons
Tip: Start with less and add more if needed. Our shampoo is concentrated and a little goes a long way!
Bathing Frequency
- Dogs: Every 4-6 weeks for most breeds, or as needed if they get dirty or smelly
- Active/Outdoor dogs: Every 2-4 weeks
- Cats: Generally every 4-6 months (cats groom themselves), or as needed
- Puppies: After 8 weeks old, bathe as needed with gentle formula
Note: Over-bathing can strip natural oils from your pet's coat. If your pet needs freshening between baths, use a diluted spray (1 tsp shampoo in 1 cup water) or pet wipes.
Special Situations
Puppies & Kittens
Our Unscented formula is gentlest for young animals. Wait until they're at least 8 weeks old. Use lukewarm water and keep baths brief (5-10 minutes). Make it a positive experience with treats and praise.
Senior Pets
Keep baths short and use warm (not hot) water. Provide non-slip mat in tub. Consider bathing less frequently and using spot-cleaning between baths.
Pets with Skin Conditions
Always consult your veterinarian before using any new product on pets with existing skin conditions. Tea Tree CA formula can help with minor skin irritations. Let shampoo sit for 5 minutes before rinsing. For any serious or persistent conditions, discontinue use and seek veterinary care immediately.
Flea & Tick Season
Lemongrass formula acts as a natural deterrent. Combine with regular brushing and environmental control. Not a substitute for veterinary flea treatment if infestation exists.
Anxious Pets
Lavender formula's calming properties can help. Start slowly - try paw washing first to build confidence. Use treats, praise, and keep sessions short.
Tips for Successful Bath Time
- Temperature: Always use lukewarm water - test on your wrist like baby bath water
- Location: Bathtub, shower, or outdoor space in warm weather
- Supplies ready: Have everything within reach before starting
- Non-slip surface: Use rubber mat to prevent slipping and anxiety
- Stay calm: Your pet picks up on your energy - stay relaxed and positive
- Treats: Reward good behavior throughout the process
- Ears protected: Place cotton balls gently in ears to keep water out
- Rinse, rinse, rinse: Can't emphasize this enough - thorough rinsing prevents irritation
What NOT to Do
- Never use human shampoo on pets (wrong pH balance)
- Don't get shampoo in eyes, ears, or mouth
- Don't use hot water - can burn sensitive skin
- Never force a terrified pet - build up gradually
- Don't bathe too frequently - strips natural oils
- Avoid bathing in cold weather unless indoors
- Don't leave any soap residue - causes itching and irritation
Cats & Small Animals
Most cats don't require regular bathing as they groom themselves. However, if needed:
- Use our Unscented formula, heavily diluted (1:10 ratio)
- Keep bath very brief (5 minutes maximum)
- Have a helper to keep cat calm and secure
- Use minimal water - damp cloth method works well
- Rinse extremely thoroughly
- Dry immediately in warm room
Small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets): Spot clean with diluted solution on damp cloth rather than full baths. Most small animals should not be fully submerged.
Troubleshooting
My pet's coat feels greasy after bathing
You likely didn't rinse thoroughly enough. Rinse again with plain water, or bathe again ensuring complete rinse.
My pet is scratching after bath
Could be soap residue or sensitivity. Rinse thoroughly with plain water. If continues, try Unscented formula. If scratching persists for more than 24-48 hours or worsens, consult your veterinarian immediately as this could indicate an allergic reaction or underlying skin condition.
The shampoo isn't lathering well
Coat may be very dirty or oily. Pre-rinse well, or do a double wash - quick first wash to remove dirt, then second thorough wash.
My pet hates bath time
Start slowly with paw washing only. Use high-value treats. Try Lavender formula for calming effect. Consider professional groomer for severe anxiety.
